About Us

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ICONSERVE

iConserve is a non-profit organization registered in Kenya and working with local communities in promoting sustainable natural resource use and biodiversity conservation. Formed in 2010, the organization works on projects that protect the environment and help communities adapt to adverse effects of climate change.

WHY WE MATTER

As in many  regions in Kenya the supply of electricity is very limited and expensive. In Nyanza and Western provinces, only 40% and 25% of the population are connected to electricity. To meet their basic energy needs households rely on locally available biomass such as firewood and  charcoal; almost 90% of households use firewood for cooking and 9% use charcoal for preparing their meals. Households  traditionally cook on open fires consisting of 3 stones, in this way burning large amounts of fuel wood in very inefficient ways. This has severe health and environmental impacts (e.g. deforestation, CO2 emission, CO inhalation).

WE CREATE A LASTING IMPACT

iConserve firmly believes that truly sustainable world is not feasible in a biodiversity-poor environment. Thus every effort must be made for sustaining biodiversity conservation. Conservation issues are complex, however solutions could be found through combination of approaches and consistency in implementation, supported by continuous innovations. iConserve has been working to achieve conservation on the ground as a central strategy where we combine research, awareness and action and set well defined conservation targets. A strong reporting system and a dedicated team of skilled people for monitoring the progress contribute significantly to the outcomes. We apply the principles of ‘Community Based Conservation’ and develop natural resource management models that actively involve local communities in the cause of forest protection to make conservation beneficial for all the stakeholders.
